Advice in this field forms around whichever number sits highest on the chart, and the number at the top belonged to Reddit. In August it fell by 86% on one platform. The reasons nobody can pin the cause down turn out to matter more than the fall itself.
The evidence was good. In March 2026 Peec AI went through 30 million sources cited by ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Reddit came out the single most-cited domain, ahead of YouTube and LinkedIn (Search Engine Land). Profound ranked it the same way across August 2024 to late October 2025, from more than 4 billion citations: Reddit 3.11%, YouTube 2.13%, Wikipedia 1.35% (Profound). Two datasets, one conclusion, and a piece of advice short enough to fit on a slide.
Promptwatch measured something else separately. On 8 August, ChatGPT's use of the site:
operator in its background searches went from about 0.37% to 16.8% of all fan-out queries in a single
day. Searches per response climbed from 1.08 to 1.83, so the domain-scoped queries were stacked on top
of the general ones
(Promptwatch).
A domain-scoped query about a company points at official sites and documentation. It seldom points at a
forum.
The dates are the first problem. The operator change landed on 8 August, and Reddit's share did slip into the mid twos that day. But the break below 1% came on 14 August, six days later, and nobody has accounted for the second date (Search Engine Journal). Promptwatch describes the size of the drop as provisional, and says a fault in its own collection remains possible. OpenAI, per Gizmodo, did not respond to a request for comment.
Second, the most-repeated objection to the figure does not survive checking. Promptwatch put Reddit at 3.83% before the fall; Ahrefs, ranking the fifty most-cited websites in ChatGPT, lists it at 16.7% (Ahrefs). At least one write-up set those side by side as a fourfold disagreement between vendors (AIVO). They are not measuring the same thing. Promptwatch tracks reddit.com's share of all citations ChatGPT Search returns. Ahrefs states its denominator on the page: mention share is "a domain's citations as a percentage of the summed citations of these top sources" — the top fifty domains only. It takes one step to verify: the fifty percentages in that table add up to 100. The long tail is not in the denominator at all.
That does not make both figures right — they also differ on query set, country and time window, and Promptwatch warns that exact percentages vary with all of those. It does mean the fourfold gap is not evidence of anything. The warning that outlives this news cycle: citation percentages from different vendors are not comparable unless you have read both methodologies, because the denominator is almost never defined the same way twice and most dashboards never state it. A share figure that does not say what it is a share of cannot be compared to anything, including its own value last month.
Third, we have seen this before. In September 2025 Reddit's ChatGPT share fell from roughly 7% to
roughly 1%, then came back to about 3%, holding second place behind Wikipedia
(Profound).
G2 growth advisor Kevin Indig suggested at the time that the cause lay with Google rather than OpenAI:
the removal of the num=100 parameter had made deep search results harder for third-party
data providers to reach. He hedged the claim and never presented it as settled
(Search Engine Journal).
Almost a year on, that collapse has no confirmed cause either.
"Reddit is the most-cited domain" was always a statement about the market in aggregate, and aggregates hide a lot. In January 2026 Reddit supplied 24% of Perplexity's citations and 0.1% of Gemini's (Tinuiti). Inside Google's own product line the gap is smaller but still large: 44% of AI Overviews' social citations against 5% of Gemini's, which Tinuiti calls almost nine times more influential for one Google product than another.
So on the engine your buyers happen to use, Reddit is either a large slice of the source pool or close to absent. A blended score, the kind most dashboards lead with, would also have flattened August into nothing: ChatGPT's Reddit citations broke overnight while Google's slid gradually — and even there unevenly, AI Overviews by 11% against AI Mode's 30%. The average of those describes none of them.
Leave Reddit alone, first of all. It was never much of a lever for a small company: communities remove promotional posts on sight, and presence there cuts in both directions. Profound measured citation rates of 6.1% for negative brand sentiment against 5% for positive, which it calls nearly identical (Profound). Answer engines go to Reddit for candid assessment, not for your marketing.
Then look at the change that was measured rather than the one that made the headline. ChatGPT now scopes roughly a sixth of its background searches to named domains, which moves your own site further into the retrieval path than it was in early August. Such a search can only return what is already indexed, which is why Promptwatch's advice to publishers is to check whether the pages it would need are indexed at all (Promptwatch). That is the failure we hit most often in audits: the page answering the customer's question exists, sits in no sitemap, has nothing linking to it, and can be retrieved by nobody.
That is a smaller instruction than "be on Reddit" and a far more durable one. Work out the questions people ask before they buy from you, and give each one a reachable page that answers it in the opening two sentences. No change to one platform's retrieval logic takes that away.
We ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI and Claude the questions your customers actually ask, and send you the score. No account, no card.
